Digital Marketing, Personal Branding, Entrepreneurship, & AI: My Conversation with Barrack Bukusi On The Financially Incorrect Podcast.
Yesterday, the Financially Incorrect podcast featuring yours truly finally went live — even though we actually recorded it way back in October 2024. Sometimes these things take time, but in this case, I’m genuinely glad it did. Listening back, I was struck by just how much ground we covered and how brilliantly Barrack Bukusi guided the conversation. He has a knack for making his guests open up in ways that feel authentic, insightful, and entertaining all at once.
The episode, powered by FXPesa, is part of a series that blends fun, myth-busting, and personal money stories with serious lessons in financial literacy. And honestly, this one had plenty of nuggets for aspiring and existing entrepreneurs, as well as anyone curious about digital marketing and content creation as career paths.
Here are some of the themes we unpacked together:
My Entrepreneurial Journey with Dotsavvy
I shared how I started Dotsavvy in 2002 — literally from my bedroom — hustling through cyber cafés, floppy disks, and weekend projects. From there, it grew into one of Kenya’s pioneering digital business agencies. Along the way, I learned that entrepreneurship is like driving on a badly potholed road with no suspension — you feel every bump.
Why AI is the Defining Inflection Point
We talked about the seismic shifts in digital marketing over the years — from websites, to social media, to smartphones. But today, nothing compares to the impact of AI. It’s changing how campaigns are run, how content is created, and how brands engage audiences. My advice to young people: don’t replicate what we were doing two years ago; instead, figure out how to thrive in the age of AI.
TikTokification & The Rise of Personal Branding
We coined the term TikTokification to describe how short-form video has reshaped consumer behavior and content creation. At the same time, personal brands are now outpacing corporate brands in influence and reach. In fact, my own blog and podcast have often opened doors that benefit Dotsavvy.
Money, Frugality & Multiple Income Streams
We also went deep into money. I shared lessons from my father’s entrepreneurial journey, my own struggles and wake-up calls (like walking out of Nairobi Hospital broke after the birth of my first child), and why frugality and reinvestment have been central to keeping my business alive for over 20 years. Most importantly, I stressed the value of building multiple income streams — from business to content to speaking engagements.
Looking Ahead
We closed by reflecting on the future: diversifying investments, doubling down on AI, and continuing to evolve as both an entrepreneur and a person. As I said in the episode, I’m still very much a work in progress.
