As I look back to the TECNO Autumn event held on the evening of September 30th, 2024, it’s clear that TECNO is making a significant brand shift of epic proportions. Once predominantly recognized as a mobile phone brand, TECNO is now carving out a broader and more ambitious path.

The event, held at the JW Marriott in Nairobi, wasn’t just about unveiling its latest range of smartphones; it was also about introducing an AI-enabled ecosystem that repositions TECNO as a technology leader in Kenya and the rest of Africa.

This ‘pivoting’ represents a strategic inflection point for the hugely popular Chinese technology brand as its moves from a mobile device brand to one that delivers a comprehensive and interconnected digital experience for consumers in Kenya, and across the African continent.

For years, TECNO and other Transsion brands like Infinix and Itel have built a strong reputation across Africa, particularly in markets like Kenya and Nigeria. Known for delivering high-performance yet affordable devices, TECNO has managed to stay competitive in a landscape dominated by global technology giants.

Now, they are leveraging this foundation to go beyond traditional mobile devices. By integrating AI capabilities across an expanded product lineup — including smartphones, laptops, gaming devices, and smart assistants — TECNO is rising up the value chain and offering customers an elevated digital consumer experience across a broad range of offerings.

A New Chapter: TECNO’s AI-Powered Ecosystem

The unveiling of TECNO’s AI-enabled ecosystem was clearly a defining and possibly a massively audacious moment for a brand has become ubiquitous in Kenya and the rest of Africa for its myriad mobile devices. TECNO’s ecosystem includes devices that support productivity, creativity, and connectivity, with AI woven into every aspect of the user experience.

From the impressive Ella AI Assistant that was showcased the at the event and built on top of Google’s Gemini Generative AI (Gen AI) platform, to advanced AI tools like AI Artboard and Smart Q&A, TECNO’s approach seems to be to make Gen AI accessible, practical, and integrated across daily tasks. Its genuinely impressive, and quite unexpected, to be honest, hinting at a highly ambitious roadmap going forward.

This ecosystem reflects a shift in TECNO’s market positioning. It’s no longer just about smartphones; it’s about delivering value through an ecosystem that enhances customers’ lives in ways that resonate with their daily needs. TECNO is clearly positioning itself to not just sell products, but to create a relationship with its customers, offering tools that help them connect, create, and stay productive.

The CAMON 30 and SPARK 30 Series: Affordable, High-Performance Smartphones

At the event, TECNO launched the CAMON 30 and SPARK 30 series, showcasing their commitment to delivering advanced technology at accessible price points. The CAMON 30 series, for instance, includes the CAMON 30S and CAMON 30 PRO, priced at Kes. 24,999 and Kes. 32,499, respectively.

These new smartphones feature Full HD AMOLED screens and high-quality cameras, making them an ideal choice for photography enthusiasts at a reasonable price. The CAMON 30 PRO’s 50MP Sony IMX890 OIS camera and 45W supercharge capability make it an impressive all round performer in catering to users who want style and performance.

Similarly, the SPARK 30 series provides an affordable option without sacrificing quality. Here’s a quick look at the pricing for Kenya:

  • SPARK 30C (128+4GB): Kes. 14,499.00
  • SPARK 30 (128+6GB): Kes. 17,999.00
  • SPARK 30 (256+8GB): Kes. 20,499.00

If you look at this competitive pricing for these entry-level smartphones you can see how TECNO understands the Kenyan and African market, where affordability and performance are crucial for consumers given our socio-economic realities — this has made TECNO and its sister brands major players on the continent on this basis.

The SPARK 30 series combines impressive design with excellent photographic capabilities, which further demonstrates TECNO’s ability to offer great value in the entry-level smartphone segment that they seem to dominate not only in Kenya but throughout many markets on the African continent.

Going Beyond Smartphones: The PHANTOM V Fold2 and Flip2 Foldables Also Get Unveiled

The foldable smartphone market has long been dominated by premium brands in Kenya and globally, but TECNO is clearly breaking through with its competitively priced and impressively competent PHANTOM V Fold2 and PHANTOM V Flip2 foldables.

Both of these devices represent TECNO’s second generation of foldables having launched their first generation in 2023. The devices represent a significant step change from what I could tell from last years models.

The V Fold2, with a 120Hz 6.42" outer screen and a 7.85" main screen, retails at KES 134,999 and is TECNO’s flagship foldable device. Meanwhile, the V Flip2, priced at KES 81,999, offers the foldable experience at a more accessible price.

These latest foldables represent TECNO’s ambitious goal to move up the value chain and redefine what Kenyan and African consumers can expect from one of their most popular technology brands when it punches above its weight.

Both of the foldables have advanced AI features that enhance everything from photography to multitasking, meaning the PHANTOM series is becoming so much more than just a smartphone; as it puts productivity and entertainment at the core of its value proposition(s).

Expanding the Ecosystem: Laptops, Gaming Devices, and AI Integration

One of the many unexpected things at the event was TECNO’s announcement of their MEGABOOK T16 laptops and Pocket Go gaming device. The MEGABOOK T16 series, powered by Intel Core Ultra processors and equipped with AI Copilot for tasks like writing and coding, positions TECNO firmly in the laptop market, a space which they are not really known for in Kenya and the rest of Africa. These AI-enhanced laptops are designed to meet the needs of professionals, making it clear that TECNO isn’t just about smartphones and tablets anymore — they’re becoming an end-to-end technology brand.

The Pocket Go gaming device, with AR integration, 16GB RAM, and 1TB SSD storage, is an impressive addition to TECNO’s lineup. The handheld gaming console, along with the MEGA MINI Gaming G1 mini PC, highlights TECNO’s ambition to enter the gaming space, catering to a demographic that values performance and immersive experiences. In addition, the Dynamic 1 Robotic Dog, an AI-powered companion, reflects TECNO’s focus on creating lifestyle devices that blend fun and functionality.

TECNO’s Market Reach & Path To Enhanced Value Propositions

One of the most striking takeaways from the event was how TECNO is positioned within Kenya, since over 50% of the active mobile devices on the Safaricom network are from Transsion brands — its a massive customer base! This reach will allow TECNO to ‘layer’ on new services and AI capabilities that go beyond just selling smartphones. By creating products and service that enhance the digital customer experience, TECNO is well poised to offer more value, build stronger brand loyalty, and tap into new revenue streams.

As TECNO continues to develop its ecosystem, it has the potential to move beyond being seen as an affordable, high-performance brand. It can now focus on adding value through software, services, and AI-driven features that resonate with Kenyan and other African consumers. This shift will not only enhance TECNO’s brand positioning but will also allow it to capture a larger market share by appealing to consumers who are looking for technology-based propositions that enhance their lifestyles holistically.

Reflecting On TECNO’s Journey and What Lies Ahead

Looking back, the TECNO Autumn event represented a pivotal moment in the brand’s journey. TECNO is leveraging its established presence in Kenya and Africa to expand beyond affordable and popular smartphones to creating an AI-enabled digital ecosystem that meets the evolving needs of its customers. This strategy will ultimately enable TECNO to deliver on its promise of accessibility and performance while positioning itself as a technology leader that offers more than just smartphones.

In a market as competitive as Kenya’s and Africa’s, where global technology giants and local players alike vie for consumer attention, TECNO’s evolution is a clear reflection of its adaptability and long-term vision. By rising up the value chain, TECNO is not just meeting the needs of today’s Kenyan and African consumers, but also anticipating the demands of the next digital normal.

As TECNO continues on this path, I’m excited to see how they leverage AI to unlock new possibilities for Kenyan and African consumers, at scale, as well as affordably and inclusively. All things considered, the future looks bright for TECNO, and with their focus on creating an interconnected, AI-enhanced ecosystem, they are undoubtedly going to play a key role in the future of consumer focussed technology in Kenya and the rest of Africa.
