In the latest episode of the Pure Digital Passion podcast, I had the pleasure of hosting Dele Akinsade, Senior Director for Microsoft Azure Cloud Expansion in the Middle East and Africa. Dele is not just a technology evangelist driving the adoption of AI-ready cloud infrastructure across Africa but also a dedicated philanthropist championing STEM education through his foundation. Our conversation offered an insightful dive into the transformative role of cloud technologies and AI on the continent’s digital economy.

Building AI-Ready Infrastructure in Africa

Dele shared his unique journey into technology, a path shaped by a foundational interest in sciences and his early career in programming and cloud technologies. His professional transition to cloud infrastructure at Microsoft has been nothing short of pivotal. His presentation at the recent CIO 100 Symposium & Awards emphasized the critical concept of AI-ready infrastructure — a necessary backbone for Africa’s emerging digital economy.

From his perspective, AI-ready infrastructure is not merely about back-end systems but also about ensuring accessibility through advancements like subsea cables, data centers, and talent development. Dele emphasized the importance of laying the groundwork to enable AI applications that will drive significant impact across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and public services throughout Africa.

Overcoming Challenges: Microsoft’s Strategy in Africa

Dele highlighted how Microsoft is addressing barriers like cost, connectivity, and regulation to drive cloud adoption. By fostering partnerships with governments and local businesses, Microsoft Azure is making cloud technology accessible and affordable. The presence of data centres in South Africa and planned expansions, including a billion-dollar data centre in Kenya, signal a strategic focus on Africa’s growing demand for digital transformation.

AI’s Transformative Potential for Africa

We delved into the far-reaching impact of AI on Africa’s economy. Dele outlined potential applications in telemedicine, personalized healthcare, precision agriculture, and public service delivery. However, he stressed the importance of responsible and inclusive AI adoption, facilitated by clear regulatory frameworks to mitigate risks.

The Dele Akinsade Foundation: Empowering the Next Generation

Beyond his corporate role, Dele’s passion for STEM education led to the establishment of the Dele Akinsade Foundation. Focused on supporting high school students — particularly girls — to pursue STEM careers, the foundation offers mentorship, scholarships, and university sponsorships. Dele recounted how showcasing female role models in tech has inspired young girls to envision a future in STEM fields, fostering a new generation of innovators.

Looking Ahead: Trends Shaping Africa’s Digital Future

Dele predicted a future shaped by open trade borders, technology-driven competitiveness, and innovative business models leveraging cloud and AI. For African businesses exploring these technologies, his advice was clear: start by understanding cloud fundamentals, categorize workloads, and focus on scalable, secure adoption strategies.
