Unpacking Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 from today’s Galaxy Unpacked Event

Earlier this evening, Samsung launched their latest foldable range during the Galaxy Unpacked event and of particular interest for me was the Galaxy Z Fold7 (Z Fold7) which is the latest iteration of their flagship foldable. My daily driver has been the Z Fold6 for almost a year and I even did a review of the same here.

The Z Fold6 is a phone I have completely fallen in love with primarily for its ability to give me the benefits of both a phone and a tablet in one device, which perfectly complements my needs for work, play, and everything else in between. Its also a really good looking phone in an impressively compact form factor.

Given that the Z Fold7 was just launched today, its probably going to be a few weeks before I get to handle it in person but one of the standout features that was clearly evident is how much slimmer it looks compared to the Z Fold6. You can see just how much larger the camera ‘bump’ looks relative to the rest of the size of the phone which demonstrates just how much Samsung was able to shave off its predecessor.

Its quite remarkable, to be honest, even though the overall Z Fold7 design language retains much of the same ‘look and feel’ that made the Z Fold6 a clear departure from previous iterations of Samsung’s foldables. The Z Fold7 is much thinner and lighter at just 8.9 mm thick folded and only 215 versus about 12.1 mm and 239 g for the Z Fold6.

Its cover display is slightly larger (6.5″ vs. 6.3″) with a wider 21:9 aspect ratio, and the unfolded main screen grows 11% in area (8.0″ vs 7.6″) which should make it easier to type on. Samsung also redesigned its hinge, now known as the “Armor FlexHinge” (multi-rail, droplet structure) and it has Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 on the cover to reduce visible creases and improve durability. In short, the Z Fold7 delivers a significantly sleeker and foldable design with stronger materials, making it more pocketable and sturdier than the already impressive Z Fold6.

Decent Performance & Battery Life

The Z Fold7 uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, a custom processor that Samsung says boosts on-device AI performance by +41% (NPU), +38% (CPU), and +26% (GPU) over the Fold6’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. This is the same processor found in the Galaxy S25 range that launched earlier this year.

In practical terms, apps will launch faster, multitasking will be smoother, and heavy tasks (games, video editing, AI features) will run more responsively on the Snapdragon 8 Elite. Samsung even suggests that this chip speeds up tasks like real-time language translation and generative photo editing. Memory options rise as well — the Z Fold7 has up to 16 GB RAM (Fold6 maxed at 12 GB) — which will help with extensive multitasking on the large screen. You can never have too much processing power in a flagship smartphone.

The battery capacity remains unchanged at 4,400 mAh on the Z Fold7 as is the case in the Z Fold6 so its stamina expected to be roughly similar to same. Charging speeds are also comparable (up to 25W wired fast-charging, 15W wireless).

An Impressive Camera System

The camera is one area where the Z Fold7 takes a signifcant step forward from the Z Fold6. Samsung has put a 200 MP wide-angle sensor into the Z Fold7’s rear camera — a first for its foldables. This ultra-high-res sensor can capture “4× more detail” and 44% brighter images than the Fold6’s 50 MP main camera. The Z Fold7 also carries over a 12 MP ultra-wide lens and a 10 MP 3X telephoto lens (both similar to the Z Fold6), offering 30X digital zoom.

However, more importantly, for video calls ,and selfies, the inner under-display camera has jumped to 10 MP compared to just 4 MP on the Z Fold6. This means much sharper video/meeting performance when using the main unfoldable display as a screen. The cover display still uses a 10 MP front camera (unchanged). Samsung also added a new “ProVisual Engine” and AI-powered image processing on the Z Fold7, improving details, low-light video, and offering new creative editing tools.

In practice, these changes mean Photo & Video benefits such as:

• Ultra-high-res main camera: The 200 MP sensor (vs 50 MP) captures far more detail and brightness in photos. Combined with the ProVisual Engine and AI processing, images are crisper and better in difficult lighting.
• AI editing tools: Z Fold7 introduces on-device editing features optimized for its large display. For example, the new “Photo Assist” and enhanced “Generative Edit” let you quickly erase unwanted objects or background clutter from photos directly on the phone.
• Video and HDR: Improved 10-bit HDR video capture and “Night Video” noise reduction (which separates moving subjects) also make video clips appear more vibrant and steady.

Overall, the Z Fold7’s camera system is a major upgrade, especially the main sensor and front selfie cam. If photography or video conferencing is a priority, the Z Fold7 will produce visibly better results than the Z Fold6.

Software & AI Features

A key differentiator is software. The Z Fold7 ships with Android 16 and One UI 8 out of the box. In contrast, the Z Fold6 launched on Android 14/One UI 6 and is only recently got the updates for Android 15/One UI 7. By launching on Android16/OneUI8, the Z Fold7 gives you immediate access to all the latest Android features and Samsung’s newest interface refinements. Even more importantly, One UI 8 is built around Samsung’s Galaxy AI platform: it’s context-aware and multimodal, meaning it can integrate what you see, say, and type.

Some headline AI-driven features on the Fold7 include:

• Galaxy AI in One UI 8: Samsung demonstrated a “multimodal agent” in One UI 8 that blurs the line between apps. You can highlight text or images anywhere and invoke AI functions (e.g. quick translations, summaries, or image searches) without switching apps.
• Google’s Gemini Live: The Z Fold7 comes with Google’s Gemini Live AI, which can answer questions about on-screen content in real time. For example, pointing to a photo of a meal and asking “What is this?” or “Find similar recipes” would trigger the AI assistant to analyze the image and respond — all on-device and in the context of whatever you’re doing.
• Enhanced multitasking: The 8.0″ screen lets the Fold7 run multiple AI-powered apps side by side (e.g. drafting an email with a summary of an open webpage, or running Samsung Notes AI summarizer while editing). The UI is designed so you jump between tasks with fewer taps, leveraging AI (such as auto-generated text or images) seamlessly on the large canvas.
• Privacy and Security: One UI 8 also adds new privacy protections (Knox Enhanced Encryption) for sensitive AI operations.

In as nutshell, the Z Fold7’s has a more AI-centric experience than the Z Fold6. Also, if you’re keen about features like advanced on-device image editing, smart assistants, or context-aware tools, the Z Fold7 immediately has them. The Z Fold6 will eventually get Android 16/OneUI8 in a future update, but the Fold7 gives you these new OS and AI capabilities right out of the box at launch.

Upgrade Considerations

Overall, the Z Fold7 is a very decent upgrade on the Z Fold6 as it refines almost every aspect of its still very impressive predecessor. The potential benefits of upgrading include:

• Latest Software Today: You get Android 16 / One UI 8 from day one, along with the newest Galaxy AI features and faster OS updates in future.
• Better Performance & Future-Proofing: The new Snapdragon 8 Elite and optional 16 GB RAM mean smoother heavy multitasking, gaming, and AI workloads. You’ll see better benchmarks and maybe a modest boost in battery efficiency.
• Superior Cameras: The jump to a 200 MP main sensor and 10 MP selfie camera yield dramatically better photos and video over the Z Fold6. If you frequently use the cameras, this is a big win.
• Improved Ergonomics: The slimmer, lighter body and larger cover screen make everyday use more convenient. For example, pocketability and one-handed use are enhanced by being roughly 10% lighter and much thinner when closed.
• Advanced AI Tools: Brand-new features like on-device photo editing, generative image editing suggestions, and Gemini integration work seamlessly on Z Fold7’s hardware and software. These features simply aren’t available on Z Fold6 until it’s updated.
